A Distributed Routing Architecture for Massively Multi-User Online Games

چکیده
Massively multi-user online games (MMOGs) incorporate computer graphics and sound to simulate the experience of realtime interaction among multiple users in a shared threedimensional virtual world. These applications therefore deal with the distribution of updates among their users to provide them with a common sense of time and place while interacting in the virtual environment. As MMOGs grow larger in terms of size and numbers of users, they tend to rely on P2P architecture as a scalable way of exchanging the huge bulk of updates among their users without the need for the exponential increase in their central servers. This paper introduces a new distributed architecture for message exchange in MMOGs applications. We propose the use of Hilbert space filling curve, due to its good locality preserving characteristics, as a mechanism for indexing users’ three dimensional locations to a single dimension. We also propose our novel routing strategy based on this architecture, which is executed among the points that are mapped over the Hilbert curve.

Scalability via Multi-Server Replication for Online Games: A Case Study of Quake 2
Multiplayer online games are an increasingly popular class of distributed applications that require scalable network architectures and parallelization approaches. Existing Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Games (MMORPG) already allow thousands of users to concurrently participate in a single application instance. However, there are several other types of genres, in particular action and...

متن کاملA Distributed Architecture for Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games
We present an approach to support Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games using a centralized distributed architecture by splitting the large virtual world into smaller areas. Our approach takes significant advantage of the locality of interest such games exhibit to reduce the bandwidth requirements for both game servers and clients. We also propose a solution to the hard problem of int...
متن کاملA Distributed Architecture for Massively Multiplayer Online Games
To date, massively-multiplayer online games (MMOGs) have been inherently limited by the client/server architecture. While some researchers and companies have proposed using grid or clustered servers, we propose a fully decentralized architecture. Our unique contribution is an architecture that scales with the number of players in communication, storage, and computation. Further, the architectur...
